I picked up my youngest son (age 12) from his church youth group last night. I asked him how things went, and he said ‘good’ – got to play dodge ball and eat snacks – yada yada yada. Then out of the blue he asks me
“Dad, do you think it’s a sin to be gay?”
Immediately: “No, I do not.” But my mind was racing. What the hell did they tell him tonight at church? But you know, I’ve been wondering how to bring up this topic with him, and he just went and took the lead. He continued:
“I don’t understand why people say that it is. God made us all. Why would the church tell gay people that they’re not allowed to fall in love and get married?”
The church is sometimes so very contrary in its message to its followers. Jesus said “love thy neighbor as thyself”. I don’t see any exclusions stated there.

Sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders. Thanks, not only to genetics, but to good fathering. Good job, dad! 🙂

Well, I don’t know if I would credit my parenting for this. But I do often wonder: when I finally do come out to my kids, will they just say “well duh! what took you so long?” 🙂

That would be awesome! A genuine relief from both sides, but all in due time.

Amazing! Truly amazing.
I was afraid this post was going in an awkward and painful direction.
I am literally teary-eyed with joy.
What a beautiful child. Beautiful mind.

🙂 My daughter says this very thing and son is involved in his GSA at school, not because I’ve fed them propaganda. It’s just so logical to them–obvious, in black and white. I love picturing this scene in your car, friend. xo

Also, my money’s on “Duh!” Because kids are smarter than adults, and generally more accepting. But as your Oscar said, all in due time.

Thank you for sharing, Maybe the hope for our country is in the hands of the young. May they see our failures and make them right. Sounds like you have a great son, and he loves his dad. Hugs

This is going to be such a non-issue for our kids. My kid is very much the same as yours.

I remember a number of years ago, a friend asked me “do you think that someday in the future, people will look back at the way LGBQ people were treated at this point in history, and think how primitive and backwards and ignorant we were?” At the time, I could only hope for such a day, but I really couldn’t imagine it. Now it’s feeling near…
